preventive health by design

This project explored how the development a novel produce market could encourage healthy eating habits in the surrounding area.  The project made use of an abandoned former garage in an area of Providence, Rhode Island without easy access to fresh fruit or vegetables.  The building incorporates a nest-like design that is the result of mapping the surrounding streets onto the building facade and continuing those same lines inside the structure itself to create shelves for fruits and vegetables.  In addition to a food market, the building would also house a "grocery truck" that would mimic the playfulness of an ice cream truck to distribute produce to areas outside of the community.  The space would host weekly cooking classes and  also have a communal vegetable garden to help create a welcoming community space around healthy food.
